School fundamentals

Bedales Prep School and Pre-Prep is an independent prep day and boarding school for boys and girls (50%/50%) between the ages of 3 and 13 years. Boarding from Year 4 for the 10% of pupils who board. 50% are full boarders and 50% are weekly or flexi boarders. The school has an academically selective admissions policy from Year 4. It is the prep school to Bedales School, an all-through school to age 18. Bedales Prep School and Pre-Prep fees range from £4,280 (Rec) to £7,850 per term (2024/25). Full boarding fees are £10,580 per term. Fees exclude VAT but include lunches.

Average class size

Bedales Prep School and Pre-Prep has one class per year in Dunannie, two in Dunhurst rising to four from Year 7, and an average class size of 16 pupils.

Leavers' destinations

At the end of Year 8, most Prep School pupils move up to Bedales Senior School.

The Bedales Prep School and Pre-Prep curriculum

School curriculum is based on the National Curriculum with additions and variations and also includes PSHE, French, Spanish, Latin. It is a thematic, topic-based curriculum to Year 6, and subject-based thereafter. ‘Greens’ for Years 4 to 8, is a self-directed activity for four to seven periods per week. Each pupil may participate in over 10 different extra-curricular academic activities or hobby clubs.

There are regular educational trips for all year groups, JAW (a visiting speaker programme) and residential trips from Year 4. ‘Outdoor Work’ is two periods per week of nature studies, conservation, horticulture, husbandry, and bushcraft.

Specialist teaching

Specialist teachers for sport, music, languages, art, DT, drama, dance and computing throughout, for maths and science from Year 4, and for all subjects from Year 7.

Sport at Bedales Prep School and Pre-Prep

School offers over 20 different sports through the year, through both the curriculum and an extensive extra-curriculum. Competitive teams in major sports from Year 3.

The Arts at Bedales Prep School and Pre-Prep

Art, music and drama are taught as discrete curricular subjects to all pupils. Regular Art Days and 4 lessons per week for art, design, ceramics, and textiles. All pupils learn an instrument in class and almost all take extra-curricular instrument lessons from Year 3. Five choirs, 3 orchestras (including a pre-prep orchestra) and over 20 instrument ensembles. The school offers each pupil over 5 different extra-curricular creative and performing arts clubs.

Wraparound care from 8.00am to 7.00pm. Minibus service.
