Caterham Preparatory School is an independent prep day school for boys and girls (50%/50%) between the ages of 4 and 11 years. It is a United Reformed Church school, open to all faiths and none. The school has an academically selective admissions policy. It is the prep school to Caterham School, an all-through school to age 18. Caterham Preparatory School fees range from £4,475 (Rec) to £6,635 per term (2024/25). Fees exclude VAT and lunches.

Most Caterham Prep pupils move up to Caterham School at the end of Year 6. Caterham School usually ranks in the top 5%-10% of schools by exam results.

The Caterham Preparatory School curriculum

School curriculum is based on the National Curriculum with some additions and variations. It also includes PSHE, French. Subjects are taught thematically to Year 2, and separately thereafter. Humanities are taught in a ‘Global Citizenship’ programme. Computing taught as ‘Digital Innovation.’ It is an Apple Distinguished School to reflect the high degree of integration of digital learning in the curriculum. A ’21st Century Skills’ programme in Year 6 includes Mandarin. The school offers each pupil between 5 and 10 different extra-curricular academic activities or hobby clubs.

There are regular educational trips for all year groups, visiting speakers and residential trips from Year 5. School has an outdoor learning programme for all year groups. Accredited with the National Children’s Bureau ‘Wellbeing Award for Schools’.

Specialist teaching

Specialist teachers for sport, music, art and languages throughout, for most subjects other than maths and English from Year 3, and for all subjects from Year 5.

Sport at Caterham Preparatory School

School offers over 15 different sports through the year, through both the curriculum and extra-curriculum. Competitive teams in major sports from Year 3. In recent years the school has enjoyed national success in netball.

The Arts at Caterham Preparatory School

Art and music are taught as discrete curricular subjects to all pupils. Drama is part of the co-curriculum. All pupils learn an instrument in class and 80% take extra-curricular instrument lessons from Year 3. Four choirs and up to 10 instrument ensembles. The school offers each pupil over 5 different extra-curricular creative and performing arts clubs.
