School fundamentals

Chandlings is an independent prep day school for boys and girls (60%/40%) between the ages of 2 and 11 years. The school has an academically selective admissions policy from Year 1. It is a standalone prep school, not tied to any one senior school, and is a member of the Prep Schools Trust (Radley Schools Group). Chandlings fees range from £5,250 (Rec) to £6,795 per term (2024/25). Fees exclude VAT but include lunches.

Chandlings has two classes per year and an average class size of 17 pupils.

Leavers' destinations

Destinations for most Chandlings leavers are an Oxford or Abingdon independent day schools. The most popular destinations are Magdalen College and Abingdon School for boys, and Headington School, Oxford High School, and The School of St Helen & St Katharine for girls. 20-30% of pupils win awards and scholarships.

The Chandlings curriculum

School curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and also includes PSHE, philosophy, STEM, French. The school offers each pupil between 5 and 10 different extra-curricular academic activities or hobby clubs.

There are regular educational trips for all year groups, visiting speakers and residential trips from Year 4. The Cothill Educational Trust owns the Chateau (and Chaumière) de Sauveterre in South West France, for Years 4-6 to spend a long weekend or week of total cultural immersion. The Trust also owns an outdoor adventure/geography field trip centre in Dorset (The Old Malthouse) for Year 6 to spend a week.

Specialist teaching

Specialist teachers for sport, music and languages throughout, and for most subjects from Year 4.

Sport at Chandlings

School offers over 15 different sports through the year, through both the curriculum and extra-curriculum. Competitive teams in major sports from Year 3. In recent years the school has enjoyed national success in squash.

The Arts at Chandlings

Art, music and drama are taught as discrete curricular subjects to all pupils. All pupils learn an instrument in class and two-thirds take extra-curricular instrument lessons from Year 3. Three choirs, orchestra and 8-10 instrument ensembles. Biennial music week. Each pupil may participate in up to 10 different extra-curricular creative and performing arts clubs.

Wraparound care from 7.30am to 5.30pm.
