Abingdon Preparatory School is an independent prep day school for boys between the ages of 4 and 13 years. The school has an academically selective admissions policy. It is the prep school to Abingdon School, an all-through school to age 18, and is associated with The Mercers’ Company. The Abingdon Preparatory School curriculum

School curriculum is based on the National Curriculum with some additions and variations. It is subject based though, in Years 7 and 8, incorporates more higher order thinking skills through the Abingdon Prep Plus curriculum. Curriculum also includes PSHCE, French, Latin. School has developed its own synthetic phonics programme, which is also used by other schools. Each pupil may participate in over 10 different extra-curricular academic activities or hobby clubs.

The school’s commitment to extra-curricular activities is characterised by its ‘Other Half’ programme. There are regular educational trips for all year groups, visiting speakers, Forest School for pre-prep and residential trips from Year 5.

Specialist teaching

Specialist teachers for sport, music and computing throughout, for French and science from Year 1, for art and DT from Year 3, and for all subjects from Year 6.

Sport at Abingdon Preparatory School

School offers over 20 different sports through the year, through both the curriculum and an extensive extra-curriculum. Competitive teams in major sports from Year 3. In recent years the school has enjoyed national success in cross country, rugby 7s, swimming.

The Arts at Abingdon Preparatory School

Art, music and drama are taught as discrete curricular subjects to all pupils. All pupils learn an instrument in class and two-thirds take extra-curricular instrument lessons from Year 3. Two choirs, orchestra and several instrument ensembles. Each pupil may participate in up to 10 different extra-curricular creative and performing arts clubs.
