School fundamentals

Westbourne House School is an independent prep day and boarding school for boys and girls (50%/50%) between the ages of 2.5 and 13 years. Boarding from Year 3 for the 30% of pupils who board. All are weekly or flexi boarders. It is a Church of England school, open to all faiths and none. The school has a non-selective admissions policy. It is a standalone prep school, not tied to any one senior school. Westbourne House School fees range from £4,465 (Rec) to £7,650 per term (2024/25). Full boarding fees range from £10,200 to £10,350 per term. Fees exclude VAT but include lunches.

Average class size

Westbourne House School has two classes per year to Year 4, often three from Year 5, and an average class size of 16 pupils.

Leavers' destinations

Destinations for 60% of Westbourne House School leavers is a boarding school, and for 40%, a day school. Pupils go on to one of 40 schools, though Brighton College, Canford and Portsmouth Grammar account for 40-50% every year. 50% of pupils win awards and scholarships.

The Westbourne House School curriculum

School curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and the ISEB Common Entrance curriculum with some additions and variations. It also includes ‘Learning4Life’, study skills and learning habits, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek. A topic-led thematic curriculum up to Year 4 and a ‘creative curriculum’ in Prep. In Years 7 and 8 the school follows the ISEB curriculum for English, maths and science, and a bespoke, more skills-based, curriculum for other subjects. The school offers each child a handful of extra-curricular academic activities or hobby clubs.

There are regular educational trips for all year groups, visiting speakers, Forest School to Year 2 and residential trips from Year 4. The ‘Westbourne Awards’ programme from Year 3 to encourage responsibility for self and others in an outdoor setting.

Specialist teaching

Specialist teachers for sport, music and languages throughout and for most subjects from Year 5.

Sport at Westbourne House School

School is one of the 50 prep schools with the most extensive sports offers in the UK. Competitive teams in major sports from Year 3. In recent years the school has enjoyed national success in athletics, golf, rugby 7s, swimming.

The Arts at Westbourne House School

Art, music and drama are taught as discrete curricular subjects to all pupils. All pupils learn an instrument in class and two-thirds take extra-curricular instrument lessons from Year 3. Four choirs, orchestra and several instrument ensembles. The school offers each pupil over 5 different extra-curricular creative and performing arts clubs.
